Summary

Department of Defense Software Management Improvement Act of 2017

This bill modifies Department of Defense (DOD) software devleopment standards to permit the use of open source software. Open source software is software with a source code that any individual can inspect, modify, and enhance. A software contractor must release source code and related technical data for such software in a public repository approved by DOD. DOD shall apply open source licenses to existing custom-developed computer software and release related source code and technical data into the repository.
