Mr. Panetta (for himself and Mr. Steube) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Armed Services


A BILL

To raise awareness of the MilTax program and other tax preparation services provided by the Department of Defense.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. Short title.

This Act may be cited as the “MilTax Awareness Act of 2023”.

SEC. 2. Promoting the MilTax program and tax preparation services.

(a) In general.—The Secretary of Defense shall ensure that each member of an Armed Force under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of a military department receives, not later than March 1 of each calendar year, an annual written notice by mail, electronic mail, or in person, of the availability of the MilTax program and other tax preparation assistance programs furnished by the Secretary of Defense.

(b) Report.—Not later than the date which is 6 months after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall submit a written report to Congress regarding the rates of participation by members described in subsection (a) in the programs described in such subsection.
